Class Party

Parents,

Our class party is tomorrow, May 19, at Xtreme Athletics from 12:00-2:00.  We will eat lunch at school before we leave for the party.  Please send lunch or money for your child.  Those who have a PEPI card can use their card.

Monday, May 18
AR Pool Party for those who have returned permission slips and have met AR goals the entire school year.  The party will be at the Rec Center from 9:00 - 11:00.

Tuesday, May 19
Our class party will be at Xtreme Athletics from 12:00 - 2:00.  Students will be transported by parent volunteers.

Wednesday, May 20
K-5 graduation will be at 9:00 in the cafetorium.

Thursday, May 21
6th grade graduation will be at 9:00 in the cafetorium.

Friday, May 22
School gets out at 10:00 a.m..  Students will begin being dismissed at 9:40.  All students should be picked up by 10:00.

Field Day
Field Day is tomorrow from 1:00 - 3:00, however, we will be dismissing at regular time with Early and Late Birds.  Students need to wear clothes that you do not mind getting dirty/wet.  Students need to bring a COMPLETE set of clothes to change into after we come in from Field Day.  I will take up money in the morning for snack/drinks.  Students may purchase up to 2 snacks/drinks.

AR Pool Party
An invitation went home with students who have met their AR goals each of the 4 nine weeks today.  The invitation needs to be completed/signed and returned by Thursday, May 14.

Elementary Honors Assembly
The Elementary Honors Assembly will be on Wednesday, May 13, at 9:00 a.m..

Please refer to the Homework Calendar for we will be working on this week in Reading, Language, and Spelling.  We will be reading Chapter 12 in Science.  We will be reading about Franklin Roosevelt in Social Studies.  There will be no tests this week.

Field Day - May 12, 2015

Field Day is Tuesday, May 12, 2015.  I sent home a flyer about Field Day today.  The field day activities are listed on the flyer.  Your child needs to wear sunscreen and clothing that can get wet/dirty.  Snacks and drinks will be available for purchase at $1.00 per item.  Please do not send money for Field Day until Tuesday.  I will collect the money on Tuesday morning.  Up to 2 snacks and juices may be purchased.

Our Week

In Math, the new concepts are dividing by 4, carrying to the ten thousands place, and multiplying by 5.
In Science, we will be reading and discussing Chapter 11 "How Things Move."  There will be a vocabulary test on this chapter next Tuesday, and a chapter test on Chapter 11 on Thursday.  A study sheet for vocabulary went home yesterday, April 27, and a study sheet for the Chapter test will go home today, April 28.
In Social Studies we will begin reading and discussing about John F. Kennedy.

Wednesday Reminders

April 8, 2015

The fieldtrip to Atlanta is tomorrow.  Please be here by 5:30 a.m. or no later than 5:45 a.m..  The bus will be leaving at 6:00 a.m..  Students need to wear their fieldtrip t-shirt or a PLAS shirt.

Clean and Green Week is  April 13-17.  Second grade is collecting aluminum cans.  The cans will be picked up on Friday, April 17.  Please send any cans you have collected to school on Thursday, April 16.  Please send them in some type of container (bags or boxes).

The Dinner Theatre has been changed to May 8.  Tickets are $15 and may be purchased in the office.

Graded paper folders will not be sent home this week.  I will send them home next Friday, April 17.

Good Morning!  I hope each of you had a great Easter and long weekend.

Announcements
The Atlanta Field Trip is this Thursday, April 9.  Information was sent home last Thursday, April 2.  Please go over the expectations with your child.
School will be dismissed at 12:00 noon on Friday, April 10, due to the prom.

Tests
The Spelling Test will be on Wednesday, April 8.  The Spelling words were sent home last Thursday, April 2.  There are no sentences on the test this week.

Reading
The concepts we will be talking about in Reading, Language, and Spelling are on the sheet attached to the Homework Calendar.  We will not have a Reading Selection Test this week due to the short week and the field trip.

Math
We will be working on dividing by 3 and coins/bills in an amount in Math.  There will not be a Math test this week.

Science
We will continue working on Chapter 10 in Science.

Social Studies
The Liberty's Legacy topic for this week is America:  Then and Now.

2nd Grade Easter Egg Hunt

Our Easter Egg Hunt will be on Thursday, April 2, at Julie Sanders' home.  The students need to bring an Easter basket (no eggs).  The food, activities, etc. have been taken care of.  We will be having lunch there.  We will have our tests and classwork the first part of the day and will be leaving school around 11:00 a.m. to go to her house and coming back right before school lets out.  I need 3-4 parents to transport students to and from the party.  Please e-mail me ASAP if you can.  Please also include the number of students your car will hold.  At this point, I have had 1 parent let me know that they can help with transportation.  A flyer was sent home on Monday with this information also.

The new concepts in Math are one-third of a group and one-third of a number.

Wednesday Reminders March 11, 2015

The 5th grade Bake Sale is Thursday, March 12.  All items will be $1.00.  Let's help support this Bake Sale.  The proceeds go toward honoring local people in our community as a part of the Liberty's Legacy Program.

Friday, March 13, is the last day to send money for the 2014-2015 PLAS yearbook.

Second grade will be having an Ice Cream Party on Friday, March 20, to reward students for their hard work on the SAT.  A notice was sent home yesterday.  Please send $3.00 cash by Friday, March 13, if your child will be here to participate.

School will be dismissed at 12:00 noon on Friday, March 13.

The Art Show is next Wednesday, March 18.

Clean and Green Recycling Week is April 13-17.  Second grade will be collecting cans.  Please start now to collect.  Pick-up will be on April 17.  There is a contest for the top grade that collects the most.
School will be dismissed at 12:00 noon on Friday, March 13.
The third 9 weeks ends this Friday, March 13.  The Honor Roll program will be on Friday, March 20, at 9:00 a.m. in the cafetorium.

5th grade Bake Sale

The 5th grade classes are having a bake sale to raise money to honor local people in our community.  We are participating in a program called Liberty's Legacy that promotes being a good American citizen and honoring heroes.  The 5th grade classes will have cookies, brownies, rice crispy treats, cake and other sweet treats for sale.  All items will be $1.00.  Students can eat their treats at lunch or snack.  They are trying to raise a total of $245 to honor these heroes through this program.  The bake sale will be Thursday, March 12 starting around 8:20 a.m..  We are really excited about this and we hope that you will allow your child to enjoy a delicious, sweet treat to help this great cause.

This week is Dr. Seuss week.  There is a poster contest that your child may participate in.  Your child  may design a poster to represent his/her favorite Dr. Seuss book.  The poster should be child-created and will need to be turned in no later than 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 5.  Listed below is how your child may dress the remainder of this week.

Tuesday-Wear silly socks
Wednesday-Wear wacky, tacky clothing...within dress code.
Thursday-Wear green clothing...no camouflage.
Friday-Wear red and white clothing.  You may wear Cat in the Hat hat if you have one.

     Tuesday - Students may wear silly socks.
     Wednesday - Students may wear wacky, tacky clothing ... within dress code.
     Thursday - Students may wear green clothing ... no camouflage.
     Friday - Students may wear red and white clothing.  They may also wear Cat in the Hat hats if

Good afternoon!
Hope each of you have a great LONG weekend!!!!!  We are out of school on Monday, February 16, for President's Day.

Announcements
We will not be working in our Science book for the next several weeks.  We will be working on getting ready for SAT tests to be given in March.

The Landmark Field Trip is on Thursday, February 19.  Students should wear their field trip t-shirt.  The activities will be outdoors for the most part, so please make sure your child has a jacket.  There is a meal provided that they help make, but you can send lunch in a lunchbox for those who may be picky eaters.  NO ELECTRONICS ARE ALLOWED ON THIS TRIP!  You may send money with your child, as they will be able to visit the Drug Store, General Store, and Gift Shop.
CHILDREN NEED TO BE AT SCHOOL NO LATER THAN 7:30!!!!!  We will be traveling on the PLAS bus.  We will arrive back at school in time for dismissal.

Language Arts
This is a review week in Reading, Language, and Spelling.  We will be rereading the stories that we have read in Unit 4 and discussing the skills that we have worked on.  In Language we will be reviewing linking verbs, helping verbs, irregular verbs, and contractions.  Your child will bring home sheets that we have done in class each day.  Please study over these sheets with your child.  The Language Test will come from those sheets.  There will not be a Practice Spelling Test this week.  The words will be words that we have already tested on.

Math
The new concepts in Math will be the 14 subtraction family, borrowing from thousands, multiplication twins, one as a factor, and zero as a factor.  The Math test will be on Wednesday.

Social Studies
Because of the short week and the field trip, we will not be doing a new Liberty's Legacy lesson this week.  We will finish up talking about the Statue of Liberty.

Our Liberty's Legacy subject this week is the Statue of Liberty.  I will send home a Fun Sheet today.  We will be reading and talking about the Statue of Liberty this week.  I need each student to bring 1 empty paper towel roll and 1 old penny by Thursday.  We will be doing activities with these things.

What's going on this week in our class:

Please refer to the sheet attached to the homework calendar for Reading, Language, and Spelling that we will be working on this week.

In Science, we will begin Chapter 9 on "Looking At Matter."

In Social Studies, we will begin Liberty's Legacy.  I will be sending home a Fun Sheet with activities that you can work on with your child.  It will not be necessary to return any of these activities to me.
This week's lesson is on the American Flag.  We will be learning facts about the American flag.  We will have vocabulary to go with the lesson.  The vocabulary words and their meanings are on the Fun Sheet.  We will do an art activity in class that goes along with the lesson.  On Friday, the students will complete a worksheet on the American flag.  This worksheet will be graded.

Daddy Daughter Dance

The girls in the class will be bringing home an invitation to the PLAS Daddy Daughter Dance.  The dance will be on Friday, February 27.  The time will be from 6:00-8:00 in the Cafetorium.  The cost is $30 per family.  If you plan to attend with your daughter, the invitation and the money need to be returned to school by Friday, February 6.  Forms turned in after this date will not be accepted.

Also, 2nd grade is going to Landmark Park on February 19.  We will be taking the school's bus.  We will not need parent drivers.  Thanks to those who had volunteered at the beginning of school to drive for this trip.

Please remember that the money for the Atlanta field trip is due next Friday, February 6.

Fundraiser

Parents,
I am sending home an envelope today that is a school fundraiser.  All you need to do is to complete the postcards in the booklet that is in the envelope, and return the booklet to school by Friday.  Please take a few minutes and do this.  Thanks!

Also, I am sending home a reminder today about payment for the Atlanta field trip.  It is a copy of the form you completed earlier.  The payment is due on Friday, February 6.

Atlanta Field Trip

Just a reminder that payment for the Atlanta Field Trip is due on Friday, February 6.

Children's Hospital and Solefood Ministries

SGA is having fundraiser for the Children's Hospital.  This is for K4 - 6th grade.  The girl who collects the most money will be crowned queen and the boy who collects the most money will be crowned king.  I sent home a flyer about this last week.

The Excel Club is collecting shoes for Solefood Ministries.  The shoes go to children in need in other countries.  They would appreciate donations of new or slightly used shoes that you have outgrown or don't need.  This will end on February 27, 2015.

We will be having a kickoff on Wednesday, January 28, at 1:30 p.m. in the cafetorium for Liberty's Legacy Super Citizen Program.  You are invited to attend.  I sent home information about this today..  There is a website where you can learn more about this.  It is:

This will be our Social Studies for the next 10 weeks.

Also, the bookfair started today.  If you would like for  your child to purchase items from the bookfair, please send money with him/her.  I prefer that the students purchase at least one book before they get any of the other items that are available.

In Social Studies, we will be finishing up with Thomas Jefferson and having the test and beginning the Liberty's Legacy Program.

KING AND QUEEN CONTEST

King and Queen Contest for Children's Hospital
January 22 - February 12
For all K4 through 6th grade students

The boy that collects the most money will be crowned King and the girl that collects the most money will be crowned queen in February.  This is a big fund raiser for Children's Hospital and is a very worthy cause.  You may collect pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, or dollars.  Please have fun and help this worthy cause!

In Science, we will begin reading and talking about Chapter 8 - Earth and Space.  The test will be next week.
In Social Studies, we will be reading and talking about Thomas Jefferson.  There will be a test on vocabulary that goes with the book I will be reading to the class.  The test will be next week.
I will send home study sheets for the Science Test and the Vocabulary Test later this week.

PLAS is having a food drive to collect nonperishable food items for the Troy-Salem Baptist Association Food Pantry.  A letter went home about this last week.    The goal is to collect 5,000 cans.  Our class has not brought in very much.  If you can help with this, please send your items by Friday, January 16.  Thanks!!!

I have requested that each student bring 2 rolls of paper towels and 2 boxes of kleenex.  If you have not sent yours, please do.  Thanks!!!!

Weekend Reminders

Good Morning!
I have just a few reminders for the weekend.

The Social Studies project related to Ben Franklin and electricity is due on MONDAY, JANUARY 12.  All you have to return is the sheet with your child's observations from the experiments.

The 2nd 9 weeks Honor Assembly will be on MONDAY, JANUARY 12, at 9:00 a.m..  This will be a regular school day afterwards.  WE WILL BE HAVING CLASS AND WORKING THE REST OF THE DAY!

Please support the Food Drive!!!! We are trying to reach a goal of 5,000 cans schoolwide.  The food drive will end on Friday, January 16.  Thanks for you help!!!!

Your child has received their new ZPD and goal for AR.  We can begin taking tests on Monday, January 12.

Parents,
Your child received 2 study guides today for tests that will be next week.  One of the study guides is for a Social Studies test on Ben Franklin.  That test will be on Friday, January 16.  The other study guide is for Science Chapter 7 on Weather.  That test will be on Thursday, January 15.

Don't forget that Social Studies project relating to Ben Franklin is due on Monday, January 12.  The only thing you need to send to school is that sheet where your child write his/her observations about the experiments.

The Honors Assembly has been rescheduled for next Monday, January 12.
Josh Johnson from WSFA is scheduled to come visit 2nd grade this Wednesday, January 7, to talk with us about weather.  We are starting Chapter 7 in Science this week and it is on weather.
If your family has not contributed $10 toward the Deer Hunt, please do so.  The Deer Hunt is this weekend.
We need paper towels and kleenex!!!  Thanks to those who sent paper towels and kleenex today.  Each student needs to bring 2 rolls of paper towels and 2 boxes of kleenex.  Thanks!

This Week
Please refer to the sheet attached to Homework Calendar for Reading, Language, and Spelling for this week.  The Grammar Test on Friday will be on combining and rearranging sentences and sentence punctuation.  We will work on this through the week and your child will bring home papers that we do in class on this.  Use those papers to help your child study for the test.
In Math we will be working on subtraction with regrouping.  We will work on this all week.  We will have a daily grade  paper on this on Friday.
In Science we will begin Chapter 7 on Observing Weather.    Josh Johnson from WSFA is scheduled to come talk to us about weather on Wednesday.
In Social Studies we will begin reading and talking about Ben Franklin.  We will be doing a couple of projects.  I will send home information about this today.
