Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

Good Morning!
I just wanted to take this opportunity to wish each of you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!!! Hope each of you have a safe holiday and enjoy spending time with family and friends.  I wanted to also thank you for being so supportive!  I am thankful for this WONDERFUL class.  They are a pleasure to teach and work with.

Here are a few announcements:

The annual Deer Hunt will be January 9-11, 2015.  This has traditionally been the largest fundraiser for both the school and the Booster Club.  We are asking each family to send $10 to help with the cost of the food.  The money needs to be sent in an envelope labeled "Deer Hunt."  If you haven't done this, please do.

Christmas Holidays are from December 20, 2014 to January 4, 2015.

The 3rd 9 weeks Honor Assembly will be at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, January 9, 2015.  This will be a regular school day.


Things we need:

We are out of kleenex.  Please send 2 boxes of kleenex on Monday, January 5.  Thanks!
We are almost out of paper towels.  We have only a couple of rolls left.  Please send 2 rolls of paper towels on Monday, January 5.  Thanks!

Deer Hunt

JUST A REMINDER

The annual Deer Hunt will be January 9-11, 2015.  This has traditionally been the largest fundraiser for both the school and the Booster Club.  We are asking that each family send $10 to help with the cost of food.  The money needs to be sent in an envelope labeled "Deer Hunt."

Good morning!
Hope each of you had a great weekend!!!! Once again, we have a very busy week ahead.
The homework calendar looks a little different this week.  Be sure to read over it.

Test for this week
Language Test on past tense and future tense verbs will be on Tuesday, December 16.  Students will need to be able to identify the tense of the verb in a sentence.

Social Studies Test on Helen Keller will be on Tuesday, December 16.  A study sheet was sent home last week.  There will be fill in the blank with a word bank and true/false.


We will be reviewing in Reading and Math.

Announcements
PTO meeting on Tuesday evening at 6:00.
Christmas Play by 2nd and 3rd grade is Thursday morning at 10:00 a.m..
School will be dismissed at 12:00 noon on Thursday and Friday.
Retirement tea for Mrs. Tommie Lynn Hinson will be Thursday from 4:30 to 6:00.

Christmas Party
Our Christmas party will be on Wednesday afternoon.  Parents who signed up to help need to send their items to school Wednesday.  Each girl and boy need to bring their gift to exchange.  Girls need to bring a girl gift and boys need to bring a boy gift.  The cost range is $10 to $15.

Christmas Play
The Christmas play is Thursday morning at 10:00.  Students need to wear their play t-shirt and blue jeans.  SHIRTS WILL GO HOME ON TUESDAY.  DO NOT WEAR THE SHIRT TO SCHOOL UNTIL THURSDAY.

Graded papers will be sent home again on Wednesday, December 17.  Please return them to school by Friday, December 19.  Thanks!

Announcements
I sent home a sheet today about the Christmas Meal.  These should be returned by Friday, December 12, 2014, so that Miss Joni will know how much to prepare.

There will be a band concert Tuesday evening at 6:00 p.m. in the cafetorium.

Polar Express Day is Wednesday, December 10.  Students may wear their pajamas that day.  If you have the movie "The Polar Express", please send it to school.  I do not have one.

PTO Santa Store will be this Thursday and Friday.  The hours on Thursday are from 7:15 a.m. until 2:00 p.m..  The hours on Friday are from 7:15 until 1:00 p.m..

There will be a PTO meeting on Tuesday, December 16 at 6:00 p.m..

The second and third grade Christmas play will be on Thursday, December 18 at 10:00 a.m..

School will be dismissed at 12:00 noon on December 18 and 19.  

There will be a Retirement Reception for Mrs. Tommie Lynn Hinson on Thursday, December 18, from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m..

The Honors Assembly for the 2nd 9 weeks will be on January 9, 2015 at 8:30 a.m..  This will be a normal school day.

Our class Christmas party will be on Wednesday, December 17.  Girls need to bring a girl gift and boys need to bring a boy gift.  We will exchange gifts.  Please do not send the gift until the day of the party.   Please remember that the price range for gifts is from $10 to $15.

In Social Studies we will be reading and talking about Helen Keller.  We will have a test on this next Tuesday, December 16.  I will send home a study guide tomorrow.

Payment for February fieldtrip to Landmark Park is due this Friday, December 5.  The payment is $12.00.

Patriot Marketplace is this Thursday and Friday, December 4 and 5, from 7:30 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. both days.  Please come and shop!

There will be a PTO meeting on Tuesday, December 16, at 6:00 p.m..  PTO needs volunteers to work the  PTO Christmas Store.  If you can help, please e-mail tracileverett@hotmail.com.  The PTO Christmas Store is December 11 and 12.  The hours are from 7:15 to 2:00 on Thursday, December 11, and from 7:15 to 1:00 on Friday, December 12.

Announcements
The field trip to see "A Christmas Carol" at the Shakespeare Festival in  Montgomery is tomorrow.  Your child needs to dress nicely.  They do not need to wear t-shirts or jeans.  We will be leaving at 8:30 a.m..  The parents that are driving need to be at school by 8:15 a.m..  I have e-mailed those who are driving.

Please return your lunch order for Thursday if you plan to come.  The orders were due today.  I sent home the order form on Friday.  This is for the Traditional Thanksgiving Meal.

Pictures were sent home Friday.  Please return your orders by Wednesday, November 19.

The Patriot Marketplace will be December 4 and 5 from 7:30 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. each day.  There will be themed gift baskets as part of a silent auction.  Each grade level will have a basket.  Each second grader needs to bring a gift card (no matter how large or small) to add to our grade level basket.  These gift cards need to be brought in by Monday, December 1.

School will be dismissed at 12:00 noon on Friday, November 21.

We are out next week for Thanksgiving.

SGA Operation Christmas Child Shoebox Collection-I sent home an information sheet last week that had this on it.  I also put it on the blog last week.  If I get further information, I will post it on the blog and send it home with your child.

No school on Tuesday, November 11.  We are out for Veteran's Day.

Donuts with Dad will be this Friday, November 14th.

Tests for the Week
Math test will be on Wednesday, November 12.  Study sheets will go home today.
Science test will be on Thursday, November 13.  A study sheet went home last Thursday.
Practice Spelling test will be on Thursday, November 13.
Reading test will be on Friday, November 14.

We will be reading and talking about how Earth's forces affect us this week in Reading.  The grammar skills are action words and abbreviations.  Please look at the blue sheet attached to the homework calendar.  It has everything on it that we will cover in Language Arts this week.

In Math, we will have Test 11 on Wednesay.  Study sheets will go home today.  We will be learning to tell time to 5 minutes and carrying to the thousands place on Thursday and Friday.

In Science, we will finish up with Chapter 5 and have the test on Thursday.  A study guide went home last Thursday.  We will begin on Chapter 6 on Friday.

In Social Studies, we have just finished reading and talking about George Washington.  We will read and talk about Harriet Tubman this week.

Good Morning!
These are upcoming events that I wanted to let you know about.  I am also sending this home with your child today.

Blow Bessemer Away
Please bring or send bubbles and helium balloons to the spirit line on Friday at 12:50 p.m..  The spirit line will form from the back of the cafeteria to the back of the gym.  Please join in the fun and help send the team off to victory!  GO PIKE!!!!

Operation Christmas Child
The SGA has started their Operation Christmas Child shoebox collection.  We encourage all families to pack a shoebox and turn them in by November 15.  You may use an empty shoebox or a plastic box from Dollar Tree.  Decide if you want your box to be for a girl or a boy and choose an age 2-4, 5-9, or 10-14.  Label the top of the box.  Fill the box with small toys, extra batteries for those requiring batteries, crayons, pencils, pens, calculators, coloring books, picture books, toothbrush, toothpaste, soap(bar in a plastic bag), comb, brush, washcloth, puppets, hard candy, t-shirts, socks, ball caps, sunglasses, hair clips, toy jewelry, watches, or flashlights.  You may also include a personal note.  The following things are not allowed:  chocolate candy, toy guns, military men, knives, liquids, medication, vitamins, breakable items, glass containers, or aerosol cans.  Please enclose $7 for the shipping cost.

Play-Off Championships

On November 21, Pike will host the Play-Off Championships at Troy University.  We hope that the Patriots will participate in it.  Many faculty and staff will have to help with this event, therefore, school will be dismissed at 12:00 noon on that day.

Good morning!
Hope each of you had a great weekend!  We made it through Homecoming week!!!!!  Second grade's float came in 2nd.  Thanks for all your help!

Announcements
Administration has changed the grading policy for grades 1-3.  Tests/quizes will count 60% of the grade and daily grades will count 40% of the grade for each subject.  I always tell the students if something they are working on will be graded.  Tests are always noted on the homework calendar and the weekly blog.  BE SURE YOU CHECK THE BLOG EACH MONDAY AND AT OTHER TIMES DURING THE WEEK!

SCHOOL WILL BE DISMISSED AT 1:30 P.M. ON FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 7, DUE TO THE PLAYOFF GAME IN BESSEMER.  GO PIKE!!!!!

This is a review week in Reading, Language, and Spelling.  We will be reviewing the stories and skills we learned in Unit 2.  We will be doing some papers for daily grades in Reading, Language, and Spelling.

In Math, we will be working on the 11 addition family, carrying to the hundred's place, temperature and carrying to the ten's and hundred's places in problems.

In Science, we are reading and discussing Chapter 5.  We will be doing some papers for daily grades on the lessons after we have read and discussed the lessons.

In Social Studies, we will be finishing up with George Washington.  We will be doing some papers for daily grades that go with a video we have watched about George Washington.

Homecoming Float

Good morning!
We were told this morning that we could begin decorating our float for the Homecoming Parade at 1:00 p.m. today.  If we get finished, we will not have to stay after school.  I have sent an e-mail to the parents who returned the form saying that their child could stay after school to decorate.

If your child is going to ride the float in the parade, he/she needs to be here no later than 5:45 p.m. this afternoon.  The floats will be lined up on the street behind the hospital.  Your child needs to wear his/her Halloween costume.  Remember, our theme is Trick or Treat.

Grading

Parents,
Administration has changed the grading policy for grades 1-3.  Tests/quizzes will count 60% of the grade and daily grades will count 40% of the grade.

Also, school will be dismissed at 1:30 p.m. next Friday, November 7.  The Pike Patriots are going to the playoffs and will be playing in Bessemer!!! Go Pike!!!!

Homecoming and Hardee's

The homecoming pep rally has an admission fee of $1.  If a child is under school age, he/she will be admitted free of charge.  The homecoming theme is Halloween, so some of what you see during the performance may be scary looking to some young children. (Ex. Spooky music, loud noises, creepy masks)  Young children may want to be accompanied by an adult.

Pike Liberal Arts School will host a Spirit Day on Friday morning at Hardee's.  PLAS will receive 20% of all pre-taxed purchases made at Hardee's between 4 a.m. and 11 p.m.! WOW!   I have sent home this information and the slip you will need at Hardee's, today.  If you need more slips, please let us know.

Also, I have sent home a note about the Homecoming float.  Please check that note and return it to me tomorrow.  Thanks.

Homecoming Parade

Parents,
We will be decorating our float for the parade on Thursday afternoon right after school.  If your child can help, we will need you to stay with your child while we decorate.  Thanks!

The parade begins at 6:00, but students must be lined up by 6:45.

I sent home a red sheet of paper on Friday, October 17, and I put on the blog on Friday, October 17, the information about Red Ribbon Week.

I will be sending home information about Homecoming activities.

Fall Festival is this Thursday, October 23, from 6:00-8:00.  Thanks for those who have volunteered to work and to those who have sent prizes for our booth.  It's not too late to volunteer.

I will not be sending home graded paper folders this Friday.

Beginning this 9 weeks, there will be one sentence that the students will have to write on the spelling test.  I put the sentence on their homework calendar.  Remember that I am attaching a sheet to the homework calendar that includes all language arts concepts that we are working on during the week.

The new concepts in math this week are the 10 addition family, quarter past the hour, quarter 'til the hour, 3 digit addition and combining coins.

We will complete Chapter 4 in Science and have the test this week.  We will be working on a Habitat project in class.

We will finish reading about George Washington this week.

Celebration!!!

I am so proud of my 2nd grade class!!!!!  Everyone in the class remained on "green" the entire first 9 weeks of school!!!!  Because of that wonderful achievement, our class is walking to Zaxby's on Monday, October 20, with Mrs. Baggett and myself.  Please send money for your child to buy lunch with that day.  Thank you for sending me such WONDERFUL students!  They are a pleasure to teach.

Good Morning!  Hope each of you had a great Fall Break!!!!

Reminders

There will be an Honors Assembly on Friday morning, October 17, at 8:30 a.m..  It will be in the cafetorium.  You should go directly to the cafetorium since the program begins at 8:30.

The Fall Festival is next Thursday, October 23.  I am still in need of volunteers to work.  If you can volunteer, please let me know.  Our time is from 7:00 to 8:00.  I have a couple of volunteers for 7:00 to 7:30.  We also need prizes.  If you can donate some small prizes for our booth, please get them to us by Wednesday, October 22.

There are NO TESTS this week.  We will be reviewing in Reading, Language, and Spelling.  There will not be a selection test or spelling test.  We will continue in Chapter 4 in Science.  We will continue reading and talking about George Washington in Social Studies.  We will do Lesson 44 in Math.

Fall Festival is coming up on October 23.  Second grade will be doing the "pick-up-ducks" booth.  I need volunteers to work from 7:00 to 8:00.  Shifts are 7:00 to 7:30 and 7:30 to 8:00.  We also need prizes for this.  Please donate.  Thanks for your help!!!!

Remember that money for Shakespeare Field Trip is due by Friday, October 10.  The cost for students is $18 and the cost for parents is $20.

I started last week sending home an extra sheet with the Homework Calendar.  The things we will be covering in reading, spelling, and language are on that sheet.

We will be starting on Chapter 4 - Kinds of Habitats in Science this week.

We will begin to read and talk about George Washington in Social Studies this week.

This is the last week of the first nine weeks!  Fall Break is next Monday -Wednesday.

Shakespeare Field Trip

The field trip to see "A Christmas Carol" at the Shakespeare Festival is coming up in November.

Additions to this week's blog

The Social Studies test is tomorrow, Thursday, October 2, 2014.  It will be a fill-in-the-blank test.
The students will have a word bank to choose from.

We are supposed to wear pink on Friday, October 3rd.    This was announced this morning.

Announcements
PLAS is collecting money to be given to the family of DeMario Harris, the CHHS student who passed away over the weekend, to help with funeral expenses.  If you would like to help, please send $1.00.

Monday, October 6 is Professional Development for teachers.  The students will be out of school that day.

The Fall Festival is coming up on Thursday, October 23 from 6 to 8 in the cafetorium.  Second grade will have the "Pick Up Ducks" booth.  Mrs. Rogers class will work from 6 to 7.  I need parent volunteers to work from 7 to 8.  Please let me know if you can help and then we will discuss the time you can work  (7 to 7:30 or 7:30 to 8).  Also, we will need prizes for the game.  Please help us with this.  Thank you.

The cheerleaders are selling chances to cheer for $1.00.  The deadline for purchasing is this Friday, October 3.  I sent home something about this last week.

The test will cover time, measurement in inches, word problem, counting by 1's, 2's, and 5's, addition and subtraction, temperature, and money.
Thursday, October 2 - Social Studies Test
The test will  be on the vocabulary/definnitions from Abraham Lincoln book that I sent home last Thursday.

Hope each of you had a great weekend!!!  Grandparent's Day was WONDERFUL on Friday!!!!!  It was so nice to get to meet the students' grandparents.

It will cover halves, temperature, greatest/least, story problem, one and two digit addition, one digit subtraction, time, place value, and counting forward/backward by 5's.  Study sheets will be sent home on Tuesday.

Science Chapter 3 Test - Study sheet will be sent home on Tuesday, September 23.

The Varsity Cheerleaders are selling chances to "Cheer for a Quarter".  The chances are $1.00 each.
They will draw out 4 names at the Chambers pep rally on October 3.  Each name drawn will get to cheer for one quarter of the game that night.  Chances will be sold from now until Friday, October 3.

PLAS Fundraiser
A letter will go home on Tuesday, September 23 about the World's Finest Chocolate Fundraiser.  Please complete and sign the form and return it to school by Monday, September 29.  Please support this fundraiser for our school!

Reading
This week in Reading we will be reading and discussing the story "Sled Dogs Run."  We will be working on the sound of long o and short o.  We will be working on -ed and -ing endings.  We will be blending words with long o and short o.

Language
This week in Language we will be talking about nouns and using commas in a series of words.

Math
After the test on Wednesday, we will be working on using a ruler and two digit subtraction.  We will also be reviewing previous concepts.

Science
This week will will finish reading and discussing Chapter 3.  The test will be on Friday.  You will receive a study sheet on Tuesday, September 23.

Social Studies
We have been reading a book about Abraham Lincoln.  We will continue reading and discussing the book.

This is a review week in Reading.  We will be reviewing Unit 1.  There will not be a Reading Test this week.  The Spelling words are review words from Unit 1.

The Math test will cover time, temperature, greatest and least, money, and addition/subtraction.  Sheets will be sent home on Tuesday to study from.

Parents (drivers) are not allowed to mingle with the students during the program. We want them to have an authentic experience. We encourage you to run errands or enjoy your day at the mall.

**We have a chartered bus with Landmark Tour & Travel. Itinerary will come later.

Although I would love for each child and parent to get to go, ONLY a certain number of passengers will fit. I will leave a spot for each child, but I have to take parents on a first come basis. The first 10 parents in EACH 2nd grade class will be assured to come. After that, I will add parents based on who turned things in first as we have room. Because of this, only one adult at most per child will be able to attend.

**PLEASE SEND AN EMAIL to me if YOU (parent) want a spot on the bus. It will make it easier for me to tell who signed up first.

     It will cover addition/subtraction, time to the hour and half hour, counting money, counting    
     forward and backward from a given number, story problems, shapes, and greater than, less than,
     and equal to.

     Science Test-Chapter 2
    A study sheet will be sent home on Monday, September 8, to help students prepare for test.
     Students will bring home Science book and notebook also to help prepare for the test.

Friday, September 12
     Reading Test
     The story this week is "Families Working Together."  The test will cover vocabulary and
     comprehension on this story.  Vocabulary words will be sent home on Monday, September 8.

     Language Test
     The test will cover sentences (statements, questions, commands, and exclamations), and
     subjects and predicates.

We will be celebrating Grandparent's Day on Friday, September 19.  Please help your child write up to 2 sentences about their favorite memory of their grandparent(s).  We will begin practicing next week.  Please send sentences by this Thursday, September 11.  Thanks!

This week in reading we will be reading "Families Working Together."  We will be working on long i, expanding and combining sentences, and quotation marks.

This week in math we will have a test on Wednesday.  We will be working on tally marks, nickels and five dollar bills, and thermometers, as well as reviewing for test.

In Social Studies we will begin listening and discussing the book, "A Great Man" about Abraham Lincoln.

Hope you had a great long weekend!


Tests for this week are:

  Math test on Wednesday, September 3.
  (Test will cover addition/subtraction, counting forward and backward by 2's, money, greatest and
  least.)
  Spelling Practice Test on Thursday, September 4.  Those who do not make 100 on Thursday will
  will take the test again on Friday.
  Reading selection test on Friday, September 5.

Graded papers will be sent home each Friday.  Please review the papers, sign the signature sheet, and return the papers, signature sheet, and folder on  Monday.

Chicken biscuits from Chick Fil-A are available on Wednesdays and Fridays.  The cost is $2.75.

Students may buy ice cream at lunch on Fridays.  The ice cream we buy is around $1.09.

AR
We began AR testing on August 26.  Each student has an AR folder with an AR Student Log in it.  Please initial when you feel your child is ready to take an AR test on their book.  Either you or your child can write the name of the book and the book level.  I will put the points they receive and the score they make.  Your child has either a blue or a pink bookmark with his/her ZPD and points goal.  If you have any questions, please let me know.

Just wanted to let you know that the students did a GREAT job on the math test yesterday!

Also, we are into AR now.  Your child should bring his/her AR folder home every day.  They received the folder today.  In the folder there is a sheet to keep a record of the tests they take.  I would ask that you write the name of the book that they are reading and the book level.  Please initial by that book when they are ready to take the AR test on their book   I have written down the tests that they have taken up to this point and their score and points.

Tests for the week:

Tuesday - Math
Thursday - Practice Spelling Test
Friday - Reading, Spelling, and Language Tests

We did a review in math today.  The students took that review sheet home with them today to study from.  Please return it on Tuesday.  The test will be Tuesday.

If students make "100" on the practice Spelling test on Thursdays, they do not have to retake the test on Friday.

We will be reading "Not Norman" this week.  The students took home a vocabulary sheet today to be studying the story vocabulary.  The reading skills for this week are:
     1. listening for middle sound in words,
     2. two-letter blends,
     3. making words, and
     4. identifying character, setting, and events.

In Language we have been talking about statements, questions, commands, and exclamations for the past two weeks.  We will have a test on Friday.  Students should be able to identify each type of sentence and write each type of sentence correctly.

Graded papers will be sent home this Friday, August 29.  I will be sending papers home on Fridays each week.

We have gotten off to a good start.  Thank you for your support.

I apologize for not having a blog before today, but there was a technical problem.  Google removed my blog and the error was not something I could fix.

This week we read "Big Red Lollipop."  The selection test will be on Friday.  Vocabulary was sent home on Tuesday, August 19.

We have completed Chapter 1 in Science about plants.  A study sheet for the test was sent home on Wednesday, August 20.  I noted on the homework calendar sent home on Monday that the test on Chapter 1 would be on Friday, August 22.

In Math we have been working on place value, addition, and subtraction.  We will have a test when we get to Lesson 12.  That should be next Tuesday, August 26.

I will be sending home papers next Friday, August 29.
